READ A BOOK AND WRITE A READING LOG
A reading log is here a summary of the chapters you have read in the book you have chosen. When you write a reading log for a chapter, you can write about what happens, what you thought of the chapter, and what you learned from it. There are several different ways to write a reading log, but the most important thing is that you write down your thoughts and reflections about the book.

Stryka under

ANSWER THE QUESTIONS
(Hitta samband i en kort text för att dra en slutsats) What purpose do these two paragraphs serve in the text: "One possibility is that the risks to children have changed. What was safe in the past may be unsafe today, placing children in genuine danger. But, for the most part, the data don't support this. Statistics from the National Crime Victimization Survey, for example, suggest that violent crime rates have decreased since the 1970s (and not only when it comes to children, whom one could argue are benefiting from the increased oversight)" "The odds that a child will be abducted by a stranger — one of the fears that motivates constant supervision — are tiny in comparison with the odds that a child will be injured in a car accident. Yet parents aren't under investigation for choosing to drive their kids to school." |

(Sammanföra och tolka) What purpose do the experiments presented in the journal Collabra serve in the article? | |
(Hitta information i en text och dra en slutsats) What statement in the article does this section develop: "For example, the mother turns away from the child for a moment to return a grocery cart and is hit by a car while doing so. On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 meant the mother did nothing wrong, people's average rating of this situation was above 3. In other words, people think that a parent who steps away from their child even for a moment has done something morally wrong. I don't have children myself, and I guess I was surprised that people are SO judgmental about other people's parenting.". Answer the question by copying one sentence from the article. |

(Hitta samband i en kort text och dra en slutsats) One of the authors of the article presented in the journal Collabra, developmental psychologist Ashley Thomas says in the text:"It seems to be socially acceptable to harass parents (particularly mothers) who are "caught" leaving their child unattended for any time at all." The American government was accused of racism on the grounds that such a device would never have been used against white civilians." "Other critics argued that American diplomats had ulterior motives. The Soviet Union had entered the war against Japan, and the atomic bomb could be read as a strong message for the Soviets to tread lightly. In this respect, Hiroshima and Nagasaki may have been the first shots of the Cold War as well as the final shots of World War II. Regardless, the United States remains the only nation in the world to have used a nuclear weapon on another nation." |

Why Do Human Beings Do Good Things? The Puzzle of Altruism |
---|
TOPIC: SELF-INTEREST OR EMPATHY?
We humans are constantly making decisions. Some decisions are easy (What should we eat for breakfast?) others are difficult (Should I break up with my girlfriend/boyfriend?). These are the difficult decisions that Steven Taylor discusses in the article “Why Do Human Beings Do Good Things? The Puzzle of Altruism ”above. He is convinced that it is only the degree of empathy we feel for others that governs our decisions. He exemplifies how he saved a spider in a shower.
People with different views on the issue would say that Taylor saved the spider because it makes him feel better. Another way of explaining on what grounds we make difficult decisions is to ask how my decision, in the short or long term, benefits my chances of passing on my genes. This view is embraced by so-called Darwinists. So what do you think? What motivates us when we make difficult decisions? How is society in general affected by these motives ? How are you and your surroundings affected? |
